Ingredients Explained: Avena Sativa – Oat Bran Extract

The common oat (avena sativa) is a species of cereal grain that is grown for its seed. Oats are commonly consumed for food as oatmeal or rolled oats, but they are also used topically in skin treatments.

Oats have been uOats-iStock_000016037079Largesed for centuries on skin due to their soothing and healing properties.  For instance, oatmeal therapy has been used traditionally to treat a variety of rashes and skin inflammation. Oats have been shown to contain vitamin E, have antioxidant properties, stimulate the immune system, and  have wound healing capabilities. Studies have shown that Avena sativa extract can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungus. In other studies, it was discovered that oats have significant anti-inflammatory and antihistamine activity.

In select Pinnaclife Animal Health products, oat bran extract (avena sativa) is used for its ability to soothe the skin and relieve inflammation and itching.

Product Spotlight: Equine Wound Shield

2014-11-21_0948The Pinnaclife Equine Wound Shield creates a water resistant, non-occlusive barrier for skin by using an advanced dimethicone silicone. This barrier acts to protect the skin but it still allows the skin to breathe.

Wound Shield also helps relieve inflammation and itching as well as control and prevent infection.  Wound Shield promotes healing by its ability to penetrate the upper layers of the skin and work from the inside out. It also promotes healing through the signature ingredient Olivamine 10, which protects against free radicals that lead to inflammation and disease, allowing healing to occur up to 50% faster.

It is ideal for all equines with: chronic or acute wounds, non-healing wounds, lacerations, abrasions, skin infections, burns, incision sites, rain rot, ringworm, scratches or”grease heal”,  and bacterial infections.
