Ingredients Explained: Chlorhexidine digluconate

Chlorhexidine digluconate

Chlorhexidine digluconate is used in select Pinnaclife Animal Health products as an antiseptic to fight off bacteria, yeast, and fungi that may infect wounds or the skin.

iStock_000014802868_FullChlorhexidine is a safe and effective FDA approved antiseptic used to decrease bioburden (the number of bacteria living on a surface that has not been sterilized) and reduce the risk of infection. Chlorhexidine is the preferred antimicrobial agent in many common products including contact lens solution, mouthwashes, antiseptics and even surgical scrubs.  It has efficacy against a wide variety of pathogens including gram +/- bacteria, yeast, and fungi.

An added benefit of chlorhexidine is that it binds with proteins on skin providing residual antimicrobial effects that can help extend the duration of antimicrobial protection for several hours.

Ingredients Explained: Denatonium Benzoate

Denatonium Benzoate-That bitter taste!

Some of the Pinnaclife Animal Health products feature “Deterrent” versions that work to keep animals from licking and chewing at their wounds or sores due to the unpleasant taste. These products contain a non-toxic, potent bittering agent called denatonium benzoate.

Denatonium benzoate is generally regarded as having the most bitter taste of any iStock_000019160754_Fullcompound known to science. It is globally accepted and is require by law to be included in some products as a safe and effective deterrent. Both the National Safety Council and the American Medical Association recommend adding the ingredient as a deterrent in products that may be ingested by children and pets. It is mandatory in antifreeze.

While having a very foul taste, the ingredient is harmless to people, animals, plants, and the environment. Denatonium benzoate is not irritating to the eyes or skin and is not considered to be a skin sensitizer. The available data indicate that denatonium benzoate does not damage genetic material and does not represent a carcinogenic concern.

The Pinnaclife Animal Health products are specifically labeled deterrent or non-deterrent. When applying these products we recommend wearing gloves, so you don’t get the bitter taste!

Ingredients Explained: Witch Hazel

witch_hazel1Witch Hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana)

The witch hazel is a flowering shrub type plant that is commonly used for its medicinal properties. The bark, leaves, and branches of the witch hazel are harvested for use in medicine. A drying and distilling process is used to extract a liquid from these parts of the plant.

There are many different uses for witch hazel and it has been around for a long time. It has been recorded that witch hazel was used by Native Americans, and later, by the settlers of North America, for the treatment of swelling and inflammation.   It has also been used in the clinical treatment of inflammatory skin diseases since the 1800s.

In the Pinnaclife animal health products, witch hazel is used to reduce inflammation and relieve itching (pruritis) associated with common skin conditions.

How does it work?

Witch hazel contains chemicals called tannins. When applied directly to the skin, witch hazel might help reduce swelling, help repair broken skin, and fight bacteria.
